The Rasquinet Triptych
The Rasquinet Triptych is a tribute to children’s free play in public space. It presents photographs from Rasquinet Play Park, a project I organized in Brussels in the summer of 2024, where children built large-scale constructions in the park using loose parts — selecting, stacking, assembling, and rebuilding materials entirely on their own terms, without predetermined rules. The Rasquinet Play Park project draws on the concept of the “junk playground”, which allows children to experiment with construction and risk, mirroring the ideals of freedom and responsibility. The park's history, tied to the grassroots movement of the 1970s, provided a fitting backdrop for this intervention. The triptych is refreshed every three months with a new series of images, celebrating the ever-evolving creativity of play.
The Rasquinet Triptych is an initiative by Annelies Vaneycken and is supported by the Urban Prevention Program (Buurtleven Service) of the municipality of Schaerbeek/Brussels. The color photographs were taken by Thomas Hansenne (Tomix_pix), while the black-and-white images are archival photos from Asbl. Rasquinet. The “Rasquinet Play Park” project was funded by the VGC (Flemish Community Commission) as part of the Playcation project call.
